A Retrospective Of Funky House 1987 - 2017

The first Funky House track I bought was 'Move Your Body' by Marshall Jefferson in 1987. Just weeks before finding that epic tune in Bluebird Records, I was given a Street Sounds House compilation by a guy I worked with on the Amstrad production line. He had just returned from Ibiza and said I should go back out with him and DJ at his mate's bar. I did not have the money for the flight, and constantly think that was one of those moments that defined my life. Anyhow, within a few months I had a sizable collection, well enough tunes to play for half-an-hour or so and went looking for gigs.

The first time I played House music in front of people was in 1988 at a warehouse party Willesden Green, London. Even though there were only twenty or so people in the smoked filled, I was instantly hooked. Some years later I was the resident DJ for Gatecrasher playing four-hour house sets to the ridiculously hip people who travelled far and wide for our authentic soulful and funky house sounds that started to flood into the UK from the States. I know us old farts are famed for saying music was better back then, well listen to these mixes and tell me it was not. Let There Be House!
