Northern Soul

Northern Soul

I was not fortunate enough to have gone to Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca or The Torch in Stoke-On-Trent. My first introduction to Northern Soul was through a guy called Andy who owned a Clothes Shop in Sheffield called Brother-to-Brother. Andy was DJ’ing at a Northern Soul night on the outskirts of the city and invited us along, being a cocky Londoner, I thought everyone looked a little, well northern. They dressed in 70's clobber and were listening to what sounded to me like obscure Motown B Sides. The energy was infectious, the spins, the splits, the jumps and them stomping Grooves.

I had to get my hands on some of these tracks, the problem was they were super rare, no one would sell you a seven, and no bugger would tape them for you. Eventually I manage to procure a bootleg album with a few killer tracks on, including R. Dean Taylor, there’s a Ghost in My House which features in the Tainted Love mix. Eventually a few labels started releasing Northern Soul compilation CDs which enabled me to get these once rare and allusive tracks.

What was once so rare and precious is now a click away, shame really as the hunt is often more exciting than the kill.
